EU Protein Imports: Put the Eligibility Check Before the Purchase

The EU's September 2026 antimicrobial import requirements reinforce a practical rule: a trusted supplier still needs a current, product-specific eligibility check.

A familiar supplier name is not a current eligibility check.

The European Commission says Article 118 import requirements took effect on September 3, 2026. They extend EU rules on certain antimicrobial uses to covered animals and animal products imported from non-EU countries. Read the Commission’s explanation.

Authorization is commodity-specific: a country or region may qualify for one category and not another. Covered consignments also need the required official certification and remain subject to official controls. A country name on a list is therefore not the whole answer.

Make the question specific

Before committing, identify the product, species, origin, establishment where relevant, destination, and intended shipment timing. Ask the responsible compliance specialist to confirm the applicable eligibility and certification requirements against current official information.

The business needs a documented answer to the actual transaction—not a remembered answer from a previous load.

Give the evidence an owner

A useful internal checkpoint records what was checked, the source, the date, and the person responsible for resolving open questions. Link that evidence to the purchase reference so procurement and logistics are not discussing different versions.

Set an internal stop point: unresolved eligibility should be escalated before the business commits to a shipment it may not be able to execute. If the product, origin, establishment, or timing changes, ask whether the previous check still applies.

Bring finance and fulfillment into the decision

The buyer may see an attractive offer. Finance sees a commitment of cash. Logistics sees documents, release requirements, and a receiving plan. All three need to know whether the offer is executable under the intended terms.

For purchases through TradeCafe, connecting purchasing, financing, and fulfillment helps keep that broader decision in view. It does not replace the importing business's compliance obligations or the work of qualified specialists.

Turn a rule change into a better routine

The lasting improvement is a repeatable handoff: identify the transaction, verify the requirements, attach the evidence, assign the open actions, and recheck when material details change.

That routine is useful beyond any one regulation. It protects the moment when a commercial opportunity becomes an operational commitment.
